President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on September 2, 1940, from the Rockefeller Memorial at Newfound Gap, NC.
The park was conceived in 1926 and authorized by Congress in 1934. Land donations and private contributors including John D. Rockefeller Jr. enabled the acquisition of the land for the park.
The park was designated an International Biosphere Reserve in 1976 and a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983, But in 1939 a young graduate student at Columbia University named Joseph Hall began eight months of field work in and around the newly created Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
