∙ 15y agoIt was founded in 1957 by 6 countries: France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium. It was then known as the European Economic Community. It later became known as the European Community. On the 1st of January 1993 it became the European Union. At that point there were 15 members. Along with the original 6 members, Britain, Ireland, Denmark, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Sweden and Finland had joined. 13 more countries have joined since then.
