"Two weeks ago, Matt Giraud was saved by the judges after being voted out, making 'American Idol' history.

But this time, the results stuck, and the dueling piano player from Kalamazoo, Mich. leaves the show in fifth place.

More shocking that Matt's elimination, however, was front-runner Adam Lambert landing in the bottom two. This was the first time in the danger zone for the spiky-haired theatre singer, who has been tabbed by bloggers and fans as an almost inevitable winner.

During the results show, host Ryan Seacrest divided the contestants into two groups: Matt and Kris Allen on one side of the stage, and Allison Iraheta and Danny Gokey on the other. When Seacrest prompted Adam to choose the top vote-getters, he joined the latter -- only to be moved alongside Matt and Kris.

Kris was then sent to safety, and after the usual delays and breaks, Seacrest finally announced Adam was also staying -- and that it was time for Matt to sing an encore of 'My Funny Valentine.'"
