It is sometimes claimed that a given artist "sold more records" or "had more hit songs" than The Beatles, but this tends to be hype, based on the number of records released, versus the number of copies sold, or is based on charts other than the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Music chart.

It must also be remembered that The Beatles' achievements were nearly all made in just seven years, from their first chart-topper to their last new release as a group. Artists of greater longevity may well release more chart hits, over a longer career. (The ratio of releases to hits could also be taken into consideration, in making comparisons to the Beatles.)

Several individual albums, such as The Eagles' Greatest Hits 1971-1975, Michael Jackson's Thriller, or Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, have outsold any Beatles album (whose average sales are 10 million copies each), and individual singles likewise, but the Beatles remain the all-time champions for total record sales.

The Beatles have sold more than 1.3 billion and Elvis just over 1 billion the nest would be Michael Jackson between 350 million and 750 million it depends on whose figures you like. The Beatles material was recorded over 8 years, Elvis 23 years and MJ 30 years so you figure who the best is.

Garth Brooks has sold more than 200 million records world-wide between 1989 and 2009. While The Beatles have sold over 1 billion records world-wide since 1963. Elvis Presley has also sold more than 1 billion records as of 2009. Both Elvis and The Beatles reign supreme because even though they were the biggest sellers in the 50s (Elvis) and 60s (Beatles) they have retained their popularity with future generations, despite the Beatles disbanding in 1970 and Elvis passing in 1977. Both Elvis Presley and The Beatles continue to get into the charts even now with their old songs. The Beatles have had their entire album catalog re-chart several times, such as in 2009. Presley also had several of his songs get back to #1 in the 2000s. No other act or group can compare to the track record of them, even someone like Garth Brooks, who has never released an album that has not been a hit.

It is notoriously difficult to determine accurate worldwide sales figures for music artists, particularly from the 50s, 60s and 70s. But best estimates for the Beatles put their sales at somewhere between 600 million and a billion. That makes them both the best-selling band and, possibly, the best selling act of all time, though Elvis Presley's sales are in the same range. ABBA is likely the second best-selling band. Universal Music certified their official sales at 375 million in January 2010, though unofficial estimates have them as high as half a billion.
