People who have walked on the moon
There have been six manned flights to the moon (Apollos 11, 12, 14, 15 16, and 17). All six flights were manned by three astronauts:
- The Commander
- The Command Module Pilot
- The Lunar Module pilot.
The Commander and Lunar Module pilot made it all the way to the surface of the moon. The Command Module pilot remained with the Command Module orbiting the moon during the lunar excursion. The men who actually walked on the moon are:
Apollo 11 - Neil Armstrong (Commander) and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin (Lunar Module pilot), . Neil Armstrong (Apollo 11's Commander) was the first person to walk on the moon.
Apollo 12 - Charles Conrad, Jr. (Commander) and Alan LaVerne Bean (Lunar Module pilot).
Apollo 14 - Alan Shepard (Commander) and Edgar Mitchell (Lunar Module Pilot). Alan Shepherd (Apollo 14's Commander) was America's first man into space.
Apollo 15 - David Scott (Commander) and James Irwin (Lunar Module pilot).
Apollo 16 - John Young (Commander) and Charles Duke, Jr. (Lunar Module pilot).
Apollo 17 - Eugene Cernan (Commander) and Dr Harrison Schmitt (Lunar Module Pilot). Dr Harrison Schmitt (Apollo 17's Lunar Module Pilot) was the first scientist-astronaut to land on Moon - Dr Harrison Schmitt who received a Ph.D. in Geology from Harvard University in 1964
