Arnold wasn't out to capture Washington, but to turn over West Point to the British. He was contacted by the British in May of 1779 and his motives were personal not political. He was greedy, looking for money, and wanted to keep the life style he couldn't afford. He resented what he felt was a lack of respect from Congress and the government of PA which had questioned his administration in Philadelphia. He choose a loyalist shopkeeper to convey his messages to the British general Clinton. His demands for payment varied but in Aug 1780 an agreement was reached for a payment of 20,000 pounds if it lead to the capture of West Point and its 3000 troops. The plot was discovered when the papers were seized Sept. 23, 1780 by the New York militia near Tarrytown after a meeting with Arnold. Arnold fled to NYC and Gen. Clinton, but his new "masters" did not trust him and he never received a major command. In 1791 he went to England and died 10 years later.
