Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler, in whose architectural firm in Chicago Wright first apprenticed. However, his style later became markedly different from theirs: They were mostly vertical, with heavy use of metal frames as exo-skeletons for buildings and the frames were embellished (see the Carson Pirie Scott department store at State and Madison in Chicago). His works with a few notable exceptions, such as the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, were horizontal, made of brick, wood and native stone and not adorned on the outside though his mostly narrow windows were intricate (see Robie House in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood, plus a multitide of structures in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park).

His mother Anne Lloyd Jones greatly encouraged him to be creative and expressive, finding him a kindergarten that used blocks as part of their curriculum and decorated his nursery with engravings of English cathedrals to encourage his passion.

Wright was also mentored by Louis Sullivan, the "father of skyscrapers" and a big influence to the Chicago group of architects who have come to be known as the Prairie School.
