it is a very old word from the English language, but brought into prominence by the 4th Earl of Sandwich who ordered these things to prevent him leaving the gambling tables. He could eat meat whilst the bread prevented his hands getting greasy and he was too lazy to use silverware.

However, though this story undoubtedly is the source of the name that we now use, the Earl of Sandwich most certainly was not the first to eat meat and bread together in some form, and even if you limit the definition to including two pieces of bread, this type of food was consumed by the Jews as early as the first century BCE. If this was the first occurrence of a "sandwich", then its inventor would be Hillel the Elder, but I doubt even that was the first time that something that could be called a "sandwich" was eaten, and the actual "inventor" of the "sandwich" is unknown.

Also, the "gambling tables" part of the story is a myth.

The name Sandwich is derived from the title of the Fourth earl of Sandwich who alegedly asked his valet to bring him soem meat between two slices of bread during a card game. he was apparently fond of food of this type as it was easy to eat and avoided the cards from getting greasy. The origin of the Sandwich is often attributed to John Montague, the Earl of Sandwich however while this style of food does take his name he did not develop the idea of putting food in bread. This has been done since the stone age, and nobody knows who first did it.
