The company was launched in 1977 as part of Silverman's Menswear, Inc. which had been operating since 1904 out of Pennsylvania. The company has always been owned and operated by the Silverman family, in the mid-70's the third generation of Silvermans to be running the business were brothers, Jerry and Mark Silverman. They launched American Eagle Outfitters in 1977 in order to draw a new demographic, the store specialized in outdoor apparel, geared towards mountain climbers, bikers, hikers, and campers. Unlike it's original store, AEO sold clothes for both men and women.
