The American microbiologist Selman Waksman invented the first antibiotic which helped with tb, typhoid, bubonic plauge and bacteria meningitis but the antibiotic was unsafe.

The first safe antibiotics were invented in 1945 by British scientists Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain.
