Zeglen's vests were made of silk fabric. He was inspired to invent a soft body armor after the assassination of President William McKinley. His invention later led to the types of body armor now used by law enforcement and military units throughout the world. I have to disagree with the above. : Stephanie Kwoled was a research chemist for DuPont in 1966, when she "accidentaly" discovered, what she later patented, and military and police use today, Kevlar. : When I say "accidentally" discovered, I mean that she was making a compound on purpose but got different results than what she was looking for, and wound up with Kevlar. -Bennett Although Kwoled invented the material that was used for body armor, Zeglen was still the first person to actually invent an armor to withstand bullets.
