The Celts who lived 2,ooo years ago in the area that is now Ireland the United Kingdom and northern France celebrated their new year on november1st this day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark cold winter a time often associated with death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year the boundary between the worlds of the living and dead became blurred. On the night of October 31st they celebrated samhain when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to the earth.
It is widely believed that Celts celebrated the first Halloween.
Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celtic new year was celebrated on November 1 and they believed the night before, October 31, the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when the ghosts returned, by building bonfires and wearing costumes.
It is a Celtic tradition where the evil spirits came to haunt the earth on one particular night, so the Celtic people dressed as evil spirits to protect themselves. I am not sure if this is true, but it is what I have been told.
Halloween was not invented as such - it is a pagan festival from the Celtic Regions of Great Britain and Brittany areas that preceeded Christian beliefs. The term comes from All Hallows Eve . The phase Hallows 'Een is of Irish origin meaning Hallows Evening
