While it is true that the Scots are famous for wearing plaids (tartans), the Hallstatt culture, which existed in central Europe in the 8th - 6th centuries BC, is the earliest known group that produced tartan-like textiles. Other such textiles have been found in China, Scandinavia, and Denmark.

The Falkirk tartan, the earliest known tartan in Scotland, is said to be from the 3rd century AD.

It is possible that Scotland did invent plaid, and that the idea was picked up by other cultures and spread, but documented history does not provide a foundation for this hypothesis.
