In 1859, scientists discovered how to isolate the active ingredient in the coca plant and make it into liquid or powder cocaine. Until cocaine was outlawed -- beginning in 1914 in the United States, and from then on, around the world -- doctors used to prescribe it for a wide variety of ailments, including (but not limited to): the common cold, sinus infections, toothaches, chronic fatigue or exhaustion, depression, impotence, and morphine addiction. It was even available as an over-the-counter medication.

At first, people mainly took liquid cocaine, but as the years went on, sniffing powder cocaine became more and more popular. As it clears the mucus out of your nasal passages (temporarily, anyway), it was regarded as an excellent cure for colds and sinus problems.

Cocaine was never invented. It was discovered as the major alkaloid present in indigenous Coca leaves, which were used for centuries in South America prior to the arrival of Europeans. Coca's psychoactive benefits were known by the West since the mid-16th-century. But it was not until 1855 when cocaine was largely discovered and crudely isolated by German chemist Friedrich Gaedcke.

A German Ph.D. student Albert Niemann discovered a more adequate way to isolate a purer form of cocaine from Coca leaves in 1860--superior to Gaedcke's prior work. Niemann also dubbed the active alkaloid in Coca "cocaine" for the first time as well. His technique for isolating & extracting cocaine from Coca became the gold standard for its production, used among most chemists. This lasted up until the early 20th century when its use was made illegal in most of the western world. At this point, most of the world's cocaine was relegated to illicit production methods, most of which were crude, dangerous (to the user of the drug, producers of the drug, and the environment), and their methodologies varied.

Finally, in 1898 Richard Willstätter discovered a technique to fully synthesize cocaine without the use of Coca. He also studied and published the structure of the cocaine molecule, which was not previously known in the medical community. However, due to expense, the extraction technique was and still is used.

Crack cocaine is just a different, more dangerous form of cocaine, that became popular in the 1980s. Cocaine was made illegal in the United States in 1914, and from then on, it was outlawed around the world.

For a long time, people had been freebasing cocaine. Freebasing is when you put the cocaine on a piece of tin foil, and light a cigarette lighter underneath it. As the cocaine cooks, a vapor rises from it, and you inhale the vapor with a straw made from tin foil.

Sometime in the late 1970s, somebody figured out that if you boil cocaine with water, baking soda, and other household chemicals, it produces a rock-like substance that burns at a lower temperature than regular cocaine. This makes it very easy to smoke, and makes the high more intense than freebasing: since it burns faster than regular cocaine, you end up smoking more of it in the same amount of time. And since you end up smoking more of it in the same amount of time, the risk of overdose and death is that much greater.

Since crack is essentially a diluted form of cocaine, it is cheaper than regular cocaine. The cheap price is what caused the crack epidemic in the 1980s, since people who normally wouldn't have been able to afford the steep price of a cocaine addiction could now get high every day for cheap.

Is sniffing crack like sniffing cocaine?

You can't snort crack. I mean, I suppose you could try. But that's not how people do it. Regular cocaine can be snorted OR smoked, but crack cocaine is only smoked. It was actually invented to be an easier-to-smoke form of cocaine.

Was cocaine ever used in Pepsi?

No, very unlikely, Coca-Cola came 40 or 50 years before Pepsi when it was invented people didn't know the consequences of cocaine, and what it was it did. That's why Cocaine was removed from the Coke formula very early. EDIT: Incorrect. Pepsi was invented 7 years after Coke, in 1893.

What was the original purpose for crack cocaine?

Sometime in the late 1970s, somebody figured out that if you boil cocaine with baking soda and other household chemicals, it produces a rock-like substance that burns at a lower temperature than regular cocaine. This substance is "crack." Since crack burns at a lower temperature than regular cocaine, it is easier to smoke. And, since crack is essentially nothing more than diluted cocaine, it can be sold at a cheaper price than regular cocaine. The cheap price is what caused the crack epidemic in the 1980s, as people who normally would not have been able to afford the steep price of a cocaine addiction could now get high every day for cheap. That is, essentially, the reason it was invented: cocaine is expensive. A cheaper form of cocaine garners more customers. For example, say a cocaine dealer has 50 regular customers who buy from him every day, and 200 other customers who only buy from him once a month, because they can't afford to buy cocaine every day. Now, say the dealer starts selling crack cocaine, as well as regular cocaine. Now he has 50 customers who buy cocaine from him every day, and 200 other customers who now buy crack from him every day (instead of buying regular cocaine from him once a month).

What year did cocaine start in coke?

Cocaine was removed from Coca-Cola in 1903. Before it was removed, it contained about 0.75 mg of cocaine per ounce. T It was removed due to increasing reports of adverse effects, such as stroke and cardiac arrests, which led to strict government controls. What the differences between cocaine and crack?

Cocaine refers to the drug in its powder form, while crack is cocaine that has been processed into a rock crystal, typically smoked. Crack is a more potent and fast-acting form of cocaine, leading to a quicker and more intense high. Additionally, crack is generally cheaper and more addictive than powder cocaine.
