"Armalite rifle" is a term used to describe two rifles developed for the Armalite Division of the Fairchild Aircraft Company - the AR-15, and the AR-18. The AR-15 was developed from the earlier AR-10. The AR-15 and AR-18 were both designed by Eugene Stoner.
The M4 is a shorter version of the M16 rifle, which is the military designation of the Armalite Rifle. Eugene Stoner is generally credited with the creation of the Armalite.
ArmaLite was a division of Fairchild, and made SEVERAL rifles that used the AR (ArmaLite Rifle) prefix. See the link below to a history of the company. Eugene Stoner was the primary designed of the AR15 series of firearms.

It was first made by the ArmaLite Corporation. When adopted by the military it was given a government designation of M16.
