Karl Benz Huhv2 Out.Earlier "self propeled vehicles were crude atempts powered by steam, mainsprings etc. The automobile as we know it is an internal combustion engine powered vehicle. there were inventors other than Benz working on similar projects Duryea bros. in USA for example. But no one had perfected a source of power. Neither Benz or Diamler invented the internal combustion engine, it was a Frenchman named DeDion. Gasoline had not been invented yet so it ran on cleaning fluid called naptha, spark was created outside the engine using a kerosene flame and "flash tube" Benz and Diamler were familiar with DeDion and were first to receive "pre" production engines. Withen a year a large number of engines were shipped around the world and hundreds of automobile makers appeared. Motorcycles took a similar path with DIamler putting his DeDion engine in a crude two wheeled outrigger wheeled for "shop use" contraption, but it had a seat so he got the patent "motorcycle"
It is not known if Verbiest's model was ever built. Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot is widely credited with building the first full-scale, self-propelled mechanical vehicle or automobile in about 1769
It was invented because people would use it as a everyday life cleaning tool
