The modern crock pots were developed froma product called the Beanery which was developed by the Naxon Company of Chicago around 1970. Rival bought the rights and refined the design.

I heard this many years ago but can't find verification: The marketing man for Rival Corp. was trying to think of a better name for the newly-acquired Naxon Beanery All-Purpose Cooker, had the TV on, and heard Vice President Spiro Agnew complaining about crackpots who were demonstrating against the Vietnam War. By changing one letter, he had his brand name.

The Naxon Utilities Corporation of Chicago developed the Naxon Beanery All-Purpose Cooker. Rival Industries bought Naxon in 1970, and reintroduced it under the Crock-Pot name in 1971.

In 1974, Rival introduced removable stoneware inserts. The brand now belongs to Sunbeam Products, a subsidiary of Jarden Corporation.

While Crock-Pot still dominates the market in the USA, Hamilton Beach, West Bend Housewares and other companies have also introduced similar slow cookers.
