The first remote controls were developed by Zenith. They experimented with a wired control, and then a highly directional flashlight control before the "space command" control was developed. The person who invented the remote control car was named Bill Campbell. He started Delta Racing and his team won the world championships in the early 1980s. I have pictures of the first working cars and airplanes.

It is likely that many people were experimenting with the technologies around the same time.

Remote control model cars are probably best considered to be an evolution rather than an invention.
