Dr. Thomas Lecky was a Jamaican agricultural scientist and chemist who studied agriculture at the Government Farm School (later the Jamaica School of Agriculture) where he received a diploma and graduated in 1930 with a Diploma in Agriculture from the MacDonald College at McGill University, Canada. He continued education at the Toronto University for his BSc degree, and obtained his PhD at Edinburgh University in Scotland. He then brought back his ideas and knowledge back to his home country to encourage agricultural growth and developed the first true Jamaican breeds of cattle: the Jamaican Red, Jamaican Black, Jamaican Brahman and Jamaica Hope. He became famous for his methods of raising and developing cattle suitable for the tropical environment of Jamaica, and for teaching people about agriculture. He also became a farmer himself as a means to help encourage agricultural growth in Jamaica.

He created the first breed of indigenous Jamaican cattle which was the Jamaican Hope. He used this breed as a basis for his Ph.D. thesis from the extensive research he had done in 1951 on cattle. Further research resulted in the creation of the Jamaican Brahman, the Jamaican Red and the Jamaican Black. Dr. Lecky also made it a passion and a career to teach young people of Jamaica about agriculture and farming and to encourage more agriculture in his home country of Jamaica, among other things. He served as:

  • Bench Chemist
  • Foreman at a Farm School
  • Farm Supervisor
  • Farmer
  • Teacher at Holmwood Technical High School
  • Livestock Inspector
  • Livestock Field Officer
  • Junior Agricultural Officer
  • Agricultural Officer
  • Livestock Officer (Senior and Chief)
  • Director of Animal Husbandry
  • Director of Livestock Research
  • Consultant

He also published an autobiography of himself called Cattle and I, among several other research papers that have been delivered at international conferences.
