Gaara is a fictional character in the anime/manga series 'Naruto', which is a show about ninjas.
Gaara is the son of the late kazekage of the village hidden in the sand. His mother died because gaara was possessed with the one tailed shukaku demon while still within his mother's womb, and this possesion kills the mother of the possessed child. Therefore, she died giving birth to gaara, and ended up hating her son and her husband, thanks to the decision by her husband, the kazekage, and gaara's father, to seal the demon inside of him so that he would defend the village against all attackers, regardless of how traumatizing doing this would be to everyone.
His dad tried to kill him numerous times during his childhood (personally and with many assassins), so many that gaara lost count. He showered him with presents, sure, but he was left alone, for gaara was feared for his lethal abilities that killled everyone around him. This trauma caused him to define his existence by the thrill of killing, and that the only thing that was worth loving was himself, and the hatred he had for himself, as evidenced by his tattoo on his forehead with the kanji love.
He is said to have raccoon eyes because like his demon's physical appearance, which has rings around his eyes, which is typical for someone possed by a tailed demon, for like naruto who was also sealed with a demon by his father, the leader of his village, naruto has fox whiskers to mirror the 9 tailed fox demon within him. The main difference with the possession was that naruto was sealed with it after birth, but gaara was sealed within the womb, which is a considerable difference.
Gaara is always tired and a bit mental because he can't ever sleep, for when he does, the demon takes over, and thousands are killed. However, in his battle with naruto, he puts himself to sleep purposefully with a jutsu so that the full power of his shukaku demon is unleashed to kill naruto, which naruto was able to handle.
He has an uncanny ability to wield sand as a weapon, as he can effortlessly encase someone with his sand and crush them into dust/sand, like rock lee with his arm and leg and those rain ninjas in the forest of death.
He carries a gourd of sand, and he maintains that sand's gourd shape with his own powers. This extra stash of sand facilitates his jutsu, which can crush individual bones as well as whole bodies, as well as protect a whole village, which he does in the latter portion of the manga/anime, when he becomes the village leader, the kazikage.
Shino Aburame, the bug genin, has a father, Shibi, and he also carried a type of container/gourd, but instead of sand, he carries bugs, and lots of them.
