After the battle between Odysseus and the suitors, Phemius plays dance music so that the townspeople will think that there is a celebration going on, eg Penelope getting remarried. They do this so that no one will get suspicious, and somehow find the bodies and report back to the town.

Phemius was forced against his will to entertain the suitors of the wife Odysseus left alone at home while on his Odyssey, Penelope. Due to his unwillingness in performing for the men, Odysseus spares his life.

Hermes convinces Calypso to release Odysseus, by informing her of the Olympus' gods decision regarding Odysseus.

Later in the story, during a flashback, Odysseus and his crew were held hostage by Circe the sorceress. She had turned half of Odysseus' crew into pigs. Hermes gave Odysseus an herb to protect himself from being turned into a pig and Odysseus was able to convince Circe to revert the crew to men.

Circe helps Odysseus by providing him with shelter and food after he and his crew land on her island. She also advises him on how to safely navigate the dangers they will face on their journey home, including warnings about the Sirens and Scylla and Charybdis. Additionally, Circe assists Odysseus in helping his crew regain their humanity after they are transformed into pigs by using her magic to reverse the spell.

Hermes gives Odysseus a magic herb called Moly, a herb that symbolizes the protection of the gods, as only the gods can uproot it. It allows Odysseus to resist Circe's poisons and not transform into a pig.

Hermes is the Messenger of the Gods. He was sent to help Odysseus on his travel, he acts as a channel.

#RandomInfo: He was the God written about the most, which could hint to him being the most popular, or important.

She doesn't. She waits for him patiently and keeps her suitors who are after her, her son, and her husbands lands, riches and belongings. She does not directly help or hinder him in his adventure, as Circe, Calypso, and Nausicaa do (the other major females in the Odyssey), but she does keep his belongings and home safe for him until he returns.

His motivations are not thoroughly explained, although it is assumed that he wants to help Odysseus because:

  1. He wishes to obey the wishes of the gods of Olympus.
  2. He wishes to fulfill his role as messenger of the gods.
  3. He wishes to obey the fates, and make sure Odysseus fulfills his destiny.
