Salam Alekum! (peace be upon you) Imam Hussain (swt) is the beloved grandson of Prophet Mohammed (swt) Muslims aknowledge his death as a martyr with a day of mourning known as Ashura. It is the 10th day of our new year. I hope this helps! Imam Hussain is the one who saved islam from being corrupted by yazid who wanted Imam Hussain to pledge allegiance to him meaning whatever he did was right but Imam Hussain did not do is so they did not give him water.
Husayn ibn Ali(AS) ibn Abi Talib Born at third of Shaban 626, at Medina and Martyr on tenth of Muharram 680 in the Battle of Karbala. He(AS)was the grandson of Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) and the son of Hazrat Ali(AS) the first Shia Imam and Fourth Khalipha and Husband of Prophet Muhammad's(PBUH) daughter Fatima Zahra.Husayn ibn Ali(AS) is known as the third Imam by most Shia Muslims and second by the Ismaili Shia Mulsims.
He was killed in the Battle Of Karbala in 680.The anniversary of his death is called Ashura at 10th Muharam in Islamic Calender and it is a day of mourning and religious observance for Shia Muslims. This day is well-known because of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali(AS) the grandson of Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) along with his family and close friends at the Battle of Karbala in the year 61 AH (680). Yazid I Ibn Muwa'via Ibn Abu Sufyan was in power then and wanted the allegiance of Husayn ibn Ali(AS). Yazid was openly going against the teachings of Islam in public and changing the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) .Historians agree that if Husayn ibn Ali(AS) had not taken the stance that he did, the religion of Islam would not be what it is today.

Answer
Imaam Husain (as) is the first Imaam according to Shi'a Isma'ili Faatemi sect. He is the son of Maulaana 'Ali (as) who is the vicegerent of Rasoolullaah (saws). His mother is Maulatana Faatema az Zehraa (as) - the daughter of Rasoolullaah (saws).
Imaam Husain was martyred by Shimr zil Jaushan on the orders of Yazeed - based in Syria in 61 AH on 10th of Moharram.
Imaam Husain (as) is one of the Khamsatul Athaar, others being Rasoolullaah (saws), Maulaana 'Ali (as), Maulaatana Faatema (as) and Imaam Hasan (as) - who all are Ahl ul-Bayt (as).
The sayings of Rasoolullaah (saws) are called as Hadees-e-Nabawi. He has said that, 'I have left two heavy / difficult things among you - Qur'an and my Ahl ul-Bayt (as)'. One who will embrace to both the things will never deviate from Siraatul Mustaqeem until he will meet me at Hauz-e-Kausar. Hence, whose who have left Ahl ul-Bayt (as) or Qur'an have disobeyed Rasoolullaah (saws). And we should not forget the saying of Rasoolullaah (saws) that, 'Who ever has left my sunnat or saying have indeed left my religion'. Hence if the Arabs don't believe in Imaam Husain (as) then according to the saying of Rasoolullaah (saws), they are not worthy to be called as 'Muslims'.
