John S. Collins is the man who, with his son-in-law, Thomas Pancoast, purchased the large sandbar that would someday be known as Miami Beach, from Ezra Osborne and Elnathan Field for $1.25 an acre. Collins and Pancoast attempted to farm the land but the rodents, possums, squirrels, foxes and other varmints ate most of the sprouts, forcing them to make the decision to build a bridge from the Miami side to the Ocean Beach side. When they ran out of money they returned to New Jersey, where they met John H. Levi, a yacht broker, who would introduce them to Carl Fisher, the real and true and only "Mr. Miami Beach." Fisher loaned them the money to complete the bridge and took land back in payment for the loan. The rest, as they say, is history.
