Who is Sarah Jane Smith?

Sarah Jane Smith is the lead character of The Sarah Jane Adventures. She is a woman in her late-50s/early-60s who officially works as a freelance journalist, but unofficially as a protector of the Earth from alien invasions and other threats. She is a former companion of The Doctor, having travelled with him during his third and fourth incarnations and later sharing adventures with his tenth and eleventh lives (as well as briefly encountering the first, second and fifth Doctors too). She is played by the late Elisabeth Sladen who first played the character in Doctor Who from 1973 to 1976, made return appearances in 1981, 1983 and 2006, and then in The Sarah Jane Adventures from 2007 to her death in 2011.
