We are. Humans who do anything that releases carbon dioxide into the air by burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) are responsible for the enhanced (or accelerated) greenhouse effect which is causing global warming.

The problem is adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, which raises the temperature and throws the system out of balance.

Science has also established that there is a direct link between the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the earth's atmosphere and the global temperature: more CO2 means warmer climate and less means a cooler climate.

The earth both emits natural CO2 (ie, from volcanoes, plants, etc.) but also re-captures it (ie, in oceans and plants which use CO2 for their photosynthesis process). This natural process is called the carbon cycle. Through this process the earth has always been able to balance the amount of natural CO2 in the atmosphere though it could take several thousands of years to do so and thus go from a warm period to a cooler one and the other way round. Since the beginning of the industrialization, some 200 years ago, humans have also started to add CO2 to the atmosphere. While our contribution is relatively low (when compared to natural emissions), the scientific consensus is that we are unbalancing the carbon cycle as we only add CO2 and do not re-capture it as nature does.

In the past 650,000 years (with its previous warming cycles) the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has never exceeded 300 ppm (parts per million). Currently, they are around 400 ppm. The rate of this increase (approximately some 150 years) is also worrying as in the past natural CO2 increases and drops took several thousands of year. As predicted by scientists already in 1988, the global temperature has risen at a rate never before experienced during that 650,000 years period.

The current scientific understanding and consensus is that:

  • the earth is unequivocally warming;
  • it is very likely (>90% certainty) that most of the observed increase in global temperature is due to man-made CO2 emissions.
  • humans need to cut on their CO2 emissions rapidly while at the same time stop deforestation (forests are a natural CO2 storage) if we want to avoid drastic global climate change and all the risks associated to that (extreme floods, sea level rise, extreme precipitation, droughts, bush-fires, etc.).

Global warming is occurring right now. At this very moment unfortunately. This is for a number of reasons:

FOSSIL FUELS: When coal, natural gas and oil are formed green house gases are produced and then they hover around the earth trapping some light beams that are bounced over to the world by the sun. Now there are massive piles of sun beams (heat) that are impossible to get rid of outside of the earths crust.

LIGHTS: When we leave our lights on we contribute to a waisting energy society. Many people cant be bothered to turn off there lights therefore are using up energy we cant afford to waist.

SLASH AND BURN: People in the rain forests (like the Kayapo Indians and etc) slash and burn parts of the rain forest they want to use for fields. All the smoke/gas produced out of this process then make their way to the other green house gases lurking around our world.

CARS: When we drive our cars/buses/taxis and etc we produce more CO2 to add to the worlds global warming crisis. People drive their cars because they cant be bothered to walk to where ever they need to be. If anyone really doesn't want to walk somewhere why not take a bus? because that will save the CO2 you were going to create.

So really, mankind is the reason that global warming is occurring.

On some level, the Earth itself, but mostly the entire human race as a whole. Our mass production of cows creates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, our paper use cuts down on trees which help slow global warming, our factories dump chemical waste and create air pollution, and our demand for electricity means that fossil fuels burn carbon dioxide into the greenhouse gases in the air for global warming.

"Global warming" refers to the gradual increase in temperature on the earth. The question is not "who" is responsible but "what" is responsible.

Human beings are not responsible for global warming. The earth has gone through numerous cycles of warming and cooling going back long before human beings were a significant presence on this planet. Ever heard of the Ice Ages? There were several. Global warming and cooling are a function of solar activity and people can't control the sun

A:Yes, humans are responsible for global warming. We have been cutting down forests and burning fossil fuels since 1750, the beginning of the Industrial Age. Combustion of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) releases long-held carbon dioxide (CO2) which adds to the greenhouse gases. Destruction of forests means that more CO2 remains in the atmosphere. The extra CO2 is turning the natural greenhouse effect into an accelerated one, which is causing global warming.

The Kyoto Protocol was developed by a number of nations. It si linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Kyoto Protocol t sets binding targets for 37 industrialized countries and the European community for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions .These amount to an average of five per cent against 1990 levels over the five-year period 2008-2012. Those nations that signed it are responsible for their own progress towards its goals of reducing greenhouse gases.

Historically the US was the largest emitter of CO2 for many decades. Only during the past ten years did China finally eclipse us over all, though the US still emits more CO2 per person than does China.

Humans world wide emit 30 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year from fossil sources. This CO2 is cumulative, it does not simply fall back out of the sky the way water precipitates or dust and soot settles out. Our best climate models indicate this additional CO2 is the primary component driving current climate change.

Why air pollution that was once blamed for global cooling is now considered responsible for global warming?

Air pollution that was once blamed for global cooling is responsible for warming because it has depleted some ozone some pockets of the ozone layer which were responsible for preventing harmful UV rays from penetrating it.
