Bacteria are unicellular organisms that have a cell wall but do not have a nucleus. They have DNA material that are of two types - plasmids and chromosomal.

Chromosomal DNA have genetic information and the plasmids have extra information that gives the bacteria genetic advantage such as antibiotic resistance. Some bacteria have a whip like flagellum that helps the bacteria to move along.

WHAT IS BACTERIA?

  • bacteria is a simple organism,
  • bacteria is single-celled organism=unicellular organism
  • bacteria was called as prokaryotes because it genetic material is not enclosed by special nuclear membrane.
  • there is 3 common shapes of bacteria; bacillus(rodlike), coccus (spherical) and spiral(corkscrew).
  • there is 3 groupings of bacteria; pairs, chains and clusters.
  • they reproduce by binary fission (dividing into 2 equal cells)
  • enclosed by cell walls that was peptidoglycan (composed of carbohydrate and protein complex)
