The current Mayor of New York is the Honorable Michael R. Bloomberg. He was elected in November of 2001 in a tight mayoral race against Mark Green, the then Public Advocate of New York City. Mr. Bloomberg totally financed his entire campaign and it is estimated that he spent between $60 - $70 million dollars on his mayoral bid. Mr. Bloomberg was born in Boston, Massachusetts on February 14, 1942. He grew up in Medford, Mass. the son of a dairy accountant and a homemaker (his mother Charlotte is 95 and still lives in Medford). He also has a sister, Marjorie, who works with him pro bono in his administration. He is an alumnus of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD where he was graduated with a degree in engineering and also of the Harvard School of Business where he earned his MBA. He came to NYC in 1966 where he was employed by Salomon Brothers for fifteen years as a stock trader until he was fired with a $10 million severance pay. He took this money and started his own company, Bloomberg LP, which specializes in real-time stock analysis. His computer terminals known as "Bloombergs" have become the industry standard among serious financial institutions. He has also branched out into media with Bloomberg Television and Bloomberg Radio. Mr. Bloomberg was married for 20 years to Susan Brown Bloomberg; they are the parents of two daughters: Emma and Georgina. He is divorced and lives in a town house on the Upper East Side instead of living at Gracie Mansion which has been the traditional home of NYC mayors since Fiorella LaGuardia's time. Mr. Bloomberg's fortune is estimated at some $4.9 billion dollars. He is well-known for his philanthropy and the School of Public Health at Hopkins was recently named in his honor for his many generous donations to the school. Despite his wealth, he is known to take the subway most days to work at City Hall.
