http://www.gg.ca/jdr/index_e.asp Born in France, Jean-Daniel Lafond taught philosophy and wrote film criticism for La Revue du Cinéma, while carrying out research in the educational sciences specializing in media pedagogy. He came to Canada in 1974, becoming a Canadian citizen in 1981. He has since devoted his time to cinema, writing and radio. After working with filmmakers Arthur Lamothe and Pierre Perrault, Jean-Daniel Lafond emerged as one of Canada's leading documentary filmmakers. In 1985, he directed his first feature-length documentary Dream Tracks (Les traces du rêve, shortlisted for the Génie Awards, best documentary, 1987) for the National Film Board (NFB). In September 2008, his two most recent works will be presented as part of the celebrations commemorating the 400th anniversary of the founding of the City of Québec. The first, Folle de Dieu, is a feature film based on the writings of Marie de l'Incarnation (1599-1672), mystic and Canada's first female author, and starring Marie Tifo. The second, La Déraison d'Amour, a play based on the film, will be produced by Lorraine Pintal at the Théâtre du Trident (City of Québec), then at the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde (Montréal). The play will also be staged elsewhere in Canada and in France. A seasoned observer of the world and of our times, Jean-Daniel Lafond has crafted films that tell touching, thought-provoking stories; philosophical poems that resonate with the call of the road, and mirror the fates of men and nations. Parallel to his involvement in cinema, he has developed an original body of work for radio (France-Culture, Radio-Canada). He has also published several books. Jean-Daniel Lafond co-founded Les Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal, serving as its president until 2005. His films have received numerous awards in Canada and abroad. He was awarded the Prix Lumières in 1999, and has been a Companion of the Order of Canada since 2005. He is married to the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and is actively involved in the responsibilities of the office.
