Each branch has a specific role they fulfill. While both branches have some duties which overlap, they also have specific niche roles which do not. The previous answer claimed the Marines did more special operations - this is simply not true, as the Army not only has a larger special operations community, but also is one of only two branches which hosts a Tier 1 special operations unit (Delta Force; the other one is the Navy's SEAL Team 6), which is a capability the Marine Corps currently does not possess.
