Type your answer here... I'm not sure, I'm trying to answer that for myself. But so far I have found that Brigadier General Harrison Thyng, born in Laconia, NH and a graduate of the Univ. of New Hampshire, was promoted to Full Colonel at the age of 26, during WW II. He was Commissioned a 2nd Lt., and received his Wings, in March 1940. In February 1945, he became the youngest Colonel in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was later promoted to Brig,. General and flew fighter jets in the Korean War. He was one of only 6 men in the World to be both a "conventional fighter ace" and a "jet fighter ace". He flew 113 Missions in the Korean War.

The Actor James Stewart was also promoted to Full Colonel before the end of WW II. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in January 1942 (at the approx age of 33 1/2). He was one of the few Americans to rise from Private to Full Colonel during WWII. He remained in the Air Force Reserves after the War, and was promoted to Brigadier General on July 23, 1959. He retired from the Air Force on May 31, 1968.
