The doctor is a 'Time Lord', an alien species from the Planet of Gallifrey. The Doctor's real name is not given out, it has been kept a secret even from his companions, only one person in the whole series apparently knows his real name of the Doctor, that is River Song.
He is said to be on the run from his own race in the beginning of the series, the apparent reason of his 'run' was his penchant for becoming "involved" with the universe - in direct violation of official Time Lord policy - that has caused the Doctor to be labelled a renegade by the Time Lords. Most of the time, however, his actions are tolerated, especially given that he has saved the universe several times over. The Time Lords are also partial to sending him on missions when deniability or expendability is needed. The Doctor's standing in Time Lord society has waxed and waned over the years, from being a hunted man to being appointed Lord President of the High Council. He does not assume the office for very long, and is eventually removed from it in his absence. The Doctor have always said himself as the last Time Lord, when others ask about the rest of his race but he have met ' The Master' who have survived the 'Time war' on many of his journeys. Time Lords are unique although they look like humans, they have astounding higher IQ than human beings as they possess knowledge out of Earth, a "respiratory bypass system" that allows them to go without air, an internal body temperature of 15-16 degrees Celsius, exhibite super-human level of stamina, ability to absorb, withstand, and expel large amounts of certain types of radiation, they also have two hearts and are able to regenerate up to 12 times before they die but it was said that "The Master", a Time Lord surpass the limit. So far, the Doctor has regenerated 11 times. He brings along companions which he have met during his travels across the universe and time. So far now, he has no companions after the loss of Donna Noble, his last companion. He travels around in his spaceship called the 'Time And Relative Dimensions In Space' or in short 'T.A.R.D.I.S.' which actually does not belong to him as he used it to escape from his home planet. It looks like a 1950's police box due to the malfunction of it's 'Chameleon Circuit' which enable the spaceship to take on any form. It was said that the Doctor did not fix it because he was fond of the police box shape. Although the outside looks small but inside is bigger than the outside which have many of his companions questioning about it. Riding in the T.A.R.D.I.S. is clearly not an enjoyable ride as shown in the series. According to the Doctor, it actually needed 6 pilots to pilot the T.A.R.D.I.S.
