EINDHOVEN, Netherlands (AP) - Alain Bernard powered into the semifinals of the 50-meter freestyle Sunday at the European swimming championships, the morning after he broke the 100 freestyle world record for the second time in two days.

The muscular Frenchman smashed his 1-day-old 100 freestyle record Saturday night to win the European title in 47.50 seconds and announced he is «the man to beat» over two laps of the pool in this Olympic year.

He looks good in the 50 sprint too. On Sunday morning, he was the only swimmer under 22 seconds, clocking 21.97. The world record, set last month by Eamon Sullivan of Australia, stands at 21.56.

In his current form, Bernard looks likely to threaten Sullivan's record in Sunday evening's semifinals.

Duje Draganja of Croatia was second fastest in the heats, more than a quarter of a second slower than Bernard, and just ahead of Stefan Nystrand, who took silver behind Bernard in the 100 final.

Janne Schaefer, one of only a handful of Germans swimming at these championships, was fastest in the women's 50-meter butterfly heats in 31.40 seconds. Most German swimmers have stayed home to prepare for their country's Olympic trials next month.

Yuliya Efimova of Russia, who won the 200 breaststroke title on Saturday, was second in 31.55, just ahead of Mirna Jukic of Austria.

Marleen Veldhuis clocked 24.47 _ three one-hundredths of a second outside the European record _ to win the heats of the women's 50 freestyle ahead of fellow Dutch swimmer Hinkelien Schreuder and Therese Alshammar of Sweden, who holds the European record.

Emese Kovacs of Hungary was quickest in the women's 200 butterfly heats in 2 minutes, 9.80 seconds, followed by Aurore Mongel of France and Mireia Belmonte Garcia of Spain.

The Austrian team of Dinko Jukic, David Brandl, Florian Janistyn and Dominik Koll qualified fastest for the evening final of the men's 800 freestyle relay in 7:18.16, ahead of Italy and Russia.
