There are a fairly large number of Gods in religious Taoism and none at all in philosophical Taoism. The major ones in religious Taoism are as follows:
There is no god in Taoism. According to Taoism, all are equal. Bill Gates is no more important than a rock. The idea that one god is higher than all living creatures, would not fit with Taoist beliefs.
The Taoist deities represent different qualities, attributes and ceremonies. The deities are Yu-huang, the Jade Emperor, Yuan-shih T'ien-tsun, the First Principal, San-chi'ing, Three Pure Ones, San-Kuan, Three Officials, San-Yuan, Three Epochs, and Pa-hsien, Eight Immortals.
There are no gods in pure Taoism. The so-called Shenxian ( gods) are but famous people in history or important natural elements. People call them Shenxian only to symbolize the tao and its different appearances.
There are three main Shenxian in Daoism.
Yuqing Yuanshi Tianzun: a symbol of tao and the origin of universe
Shangqing Lingbao Tianzun: a symbol of taoism teachings
Taiqing Daode Tianjun: Lao Tzu, a symbol of taoist masters and teachers, advocators of taosim.
It is kind of like the trinity of Christianity.
The main Deities of Taoism are the Jade Emperor, the Four Heavenly Emperors and also the Five Emperors of the Five Directions, aa well as the immortals who humans can become through self-cultivation. ~See the related link for more information~
"Tao". Hence the term "Taoism". But the interesting question then becomes, "What is the Tao?"
Taoism has numerous deities.
Taoism falls within the traditional Chinese religion and is polytheistic. Its many deities are part of a heavenly hierarchy that mirrors the bureaucracy of Imperial China. According to their beliefs, Chinese deities may be promoted or demoted for their actions. Some deities are also simply exalted humans, such as Guan Yu, the god of honor and piety. The particular deities worshipped vary according to geographical regions and historical periods in China, though the general pattern of worship is more constant. There are disagreements regarding the proper composition of this pantheon. Popular Taoism typically presents the Jade Emperor as the official head deity. Intellectual ("elite") Taoists, such as the Celestial Masters sect, usually present Laozi (Laojun, "Lord Lao") and the Three Pure Ones at the top of the pantheon of deities.
Taoism is still widely practiced in China, Hong kong, Taiwan and various overseas Chinese communites. There are many temples and shrines dedicated to Taoist deities. There are taoist associations all around the world. The ever popular study of Fongsui, the Chinese zodiacs all came from Taoism believes.
Taoists practice ancestor worship. Many own ancestral tablets with the ancestors' names inscribed on them along with incense as a medium to communicate with the deities.
Taoist deities include nature spirits, ancient legendary heroes, humanized planets and stars, humans who became immortal through Taoist practices, and animals such as dragons, tigers, and snakes.
