As of July 26, 2010, the oldest drummer alive is 93 year old Donald C. Kidwell, who currently resides in San Diego, California. He has been playing drums for over 70 years, and was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1917.
His drum kit consists of vintage Gretch, Ludwig, Zildjian, and other makes, mostly from the 1940's.
He has played in countless Big Band, Swing, Jazz, and other bands from Ohio to California. He also has a son Pete (53) who also plays drums, currently in 4 bands- 3 Classic Rock, and one Country/Oldies band.
Tino Contreras, 87, is the "oldest professional drummer still doing gigs"
looking for his competition, I only found:
Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones is one of the older professional drummers that still perform, he is 68 years old.
Jim Chapin may be 89, but in the last 20 or so years of his life, he has focused on music education and hasn't been playing out. I don't think he fits "still playing gigs."
Freddie Gruber will be 84 this May, and he may still teach, but I don't believe he's been a performer for some time.
Louie Bellson was the oldest productive drummer, doing studio work until age 83.
Eric Delaney was still playing gigs in 2010 at the age of 86.
but Tino Contreras, 87, is the oldest professional drummer still doing gigs, he released 2 CDs in 2010, and a new one in the next spring, and has a huge European Tour for the summer.
Since 1954, Tino has devoted his life to the performance, composition and teaching of Mexican jazz. He has traveled around the world in long journeys through The United States, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Germany, France, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Cuba, Haiti and many more. Tino has recorded 47 records in several countries. (more info.- www.tinocontreras.com)
