Medvedev was elected on 2008 March 2 and took office on 2008 May 7 as the third President of Russia. He succeeded Vladimir Putin, who was constitutionally forbidden to run, and who became prime minister. Medvedev's term ended in 2012 May 7 as Putin once again became president, making Medvedev the Prime Minister of Russia.
