Nola Ochs is just as likely to answer questions as to ask them. That's not the only thing distinguishing her from fellow students at Fort Hays State University. She's 95, and when she graduates May 12, she'll be what is believed to be the world's oldest person to be awarded a college degree. She didn't plan it that way. She just loved to learn as a teenager on a Hodgeman County farm, then as a teacher at a one-room school after graduating from high school and later as a farm wife and mother. "That yearning for study was still there. I came here with no thought of it being an unusual thing at all," she said. "It was something I wanted to do. It gave me a feeling of satisfaction. I like to study and learn." The record Ochs will break, according to Guinness World Records, belongs to Mozelle Richardson, who at age 90 in 2004 received a journalism degree from the University of Oklahoma. "We should all be so lucky and do such amazing things. Her achievement challenges us all to reach for our own goals and dreams," said Tom Nelson, AARP chief operating officer in Washington.
Brandenn Bremmer, age 10
I often wondered what the answer to this question was for the era we now live in. My reason being, my father graduated high school in 1945 having just turned 13 years old. He really was a genius, which I assure everyone didn't rub off. LOL. He had his bachelors degree by the time he was 17, and had finished his masters degree by the time he was 20. I was quite certain with technology being what it is these days that my dad had been surpassed by someone younger. By it's still quite a feat!!
In San Francisco Bay area a 97 year old great grandmother graduated from high school. Lots of students were kind to her and even threw her a party. Pretty cool, but at the same time, you probably wonder, what was the point when her life is almost over? The point is she accomplished something, she wanted to accomplish something before she left the earth, and she did it. As for me, I think its crazy enough I might have to graduate at 19 1/2 years old.
