This question is pretty tricky given when they patented their invention. Charles Babbage is said to invent the first mechanical computer, with Ada Lovelace being the programmer. However, Alan Turing, an English computer scientist, worked on a 'machine' with a bunch of other scientists at Bletchly park to decrypt the German codes during world war 2. This went on to become the modern computer.
