Lincoln was shot at Fords Theater while watching a play called Our American Cousin. He was shot by John Wilkes Booth, an actor, who thought by killing him he could keep the civil war going. He also thought he would be seen as a hero by the south according to his diary, but this was not the case. Instead he was not given any help by the people he approached for help and ended up dying in a VA barn shot by a Sargent Corbett of the Union Army. Lincoln, after he was shot in the back of the head, was taken across the street from the theater to a boarding house and placed in a bed on the second floor. He died there the next morning and his body was carried by train across country to his burial in Springfield, Ill. Thousands waited at the railroad stations to pay their respects to the president as his body moved it's way from Washington DC to Springfield.
