General George Washington had a combined American and French army in Yorktown.

A French General, the Marquis de Lafayette, commanded a combined assortment of American regulars and militia in Virginia. Although Lafayette was a frenchman, it should be noted that he held his commission fron the Continental Congress as a Major General in the Continental Army. As part of the alliance signed between France and the united States, the French had sent an army of 8,ooo men to America, under General Rochombeau (Sp?) with orders to place himself under Washingtons command. These forces, along with a substantial naval fleet under Admiral De Grasse were vital to winning the battle of Yorktown.
