Originally known as Buckingham House,

The building forming the core of today's palace was a large townhouse built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703 and acquired by George III in 1761 as a private residence, known as "The Queen's House".

It was enlarged over the next 75 years, principally by architects John Nash and Edward Blore, forming three wings around a central courtyard.

Buckingham Palace finally became the official royal palace of the British monarch on the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837.

Since then the folowing monarchs have lived there with there families :-

Edward VII, 22 January 1901-1910

George V, 6 May 1910-1936

Edward VIII, 20 January - 11 December 1936

George VI, 11 December 1936 - 6 February 1952

Elizabeth II, 6 February 1952-present day.

The last major structural additions were made in the late 19th and early 20th century, including the present-day public face of Buckingham Palace.

What was the name of the section of London where the royalty lived?

The Queen lives in Buckingham Palace in London. The Palace is between Hyde Park and Westminster. Other palaces in London which are home to royals are Kensington Palace and St. James' Palace. The royals don't all live in one place, they live all over England, for example The Queen also has a residence in Balmoral Castle in Scotland. But most have homes in London. I would recommend that Buckingham Palace is a must see, if you are in London.
