NO NOT Stephen Hawking he wasn't born then. It was Tommy Flowers working at Bletchley Park in WW2. It's purpose was to crack the Lorenz code which unlike Enigma was a teleprinter cypher machine. The genius who laid the groundwork for Colossus was Bill Tutte who worked out the form of the cogs within the Lorenz cypher machine which enabled Tommy Flowers to design and build Colossus
The Colossus computer was originally made at the Post Office Research Station at Dollis Hill in London, then after checkout and testing dismantled and transported to Bletchley Park where it was reassembled. However once the Colossus was proven they began being made directly at Bletchley Park to eliminate the delay of assembly, disassembly, and reassembly.
