The element, 'Copper' has been known to man for so many thousands of years, that we simply do not know who named it.

'Copper' is not the original name, though. The original accepted name was 'Kupros' in Greek, and 'Cuprum' in Latin.

This is why the abbreviation for copper is "Cu".
