There have been many influential figures who helped to create the sport of skydiving, some of them helped to create the first balloons and aircraft, some of them helped to create the first parachute. Without these technologies, the sport of skydiving could not have come into existance.

Parachuting is a much more simple term used to describe the act of descending slowly to the ground under an open parachute. During a skydive, a jumper is in freefall with packed unopened parachute on their back.

After World War 2, many war-time parachutists bought surplus second hand equipment and set up the first civilian parachute clubs. Arguably it is they who turned it from a military activity into a sport. These many independant clubs began in the 1950's and grouped together into national associations of various countries during the 1960's.

For example my club, skydiving.co.uk has its roots back to the early 1960's and became a part of the British Parachute Association in about 1966. Hope that helps.

Has skydiving become a sport today?

Skydiving became a sport over 50 years ago once competitions came into being. The first parachuting competitions were run around the 1950's and were accuracy based. When freefall skydiving began, there were even low pull contests, but fortunately these no longer exist. Today there are World Championships in formation skydiving, freefly, vertical formation skydiving, etc. There are professional teams, competitors, judges and scoring systems. In fact the first World Parachuting Championships took place in 1951 and were held in Yugoslavia. Sadly skydiving has not made it to the same leagues as golf or footable as a spectator sport, however it is a popular one with many thousands of regular jumpers around the world. The starting step to becoming a competitor is to take a basic course such as AFF (Accelerated Freefall). A good place to do this is Skydive Hibaldstow which also hosts the UK National Championships every year. After completing your course, you will make friends and learn how to skydive with them, hiring coaches and entering the low ranked competitions.
