They found brain matter in John Carpenter's car (NOT the director) but they didn't have DNA testing back then they could only test blood type and the blood type found in the car matched Bob Crane's blood type (there was other evidence but I don't wanna get into that sorry) so they prosecuted him but he wasn't found guilty. A few years later they got DNA testing and tried to reopen the case but they didn't preserve the evidence properly so they couldn't reopen it. Also John Carpenter died four years after he was found not guilty.

∙ 14y agoActor Bob Crane, star of the 1960's comedy Hogans Heros, was found dead in his bed, blugeoned to death, mostly on the head. Crane was born on July 13, 1928 in Waterbury, CT. He died on June 29, 1978.
Crane's murder went unsolved for almost 20 years. The police had suspected a man named Robert Carpenter, who was a friend of Crane's, of doing the crime. But before the days of pocket computers and DNA and the complex forensics of modern law enforcement, blood typing and fingerprints were all they had in the way of solving crimes. They used eye witnesses which are notoriously inaccurate.
With the advent of DNA it's a lot harder to remain undected. There were several small smears of blood inside the drivers side door of Carpenter's car. It was Crane's blood.
The reason for the murder, Carpenter says, Crane was turning 50 and he wanted to act more mature, maybe even get married again.
