The German apothecary and botanist Johann Friedrich Klotzsch (June 9, 1805 - November 5, 1860) and the German botanist and pharmacist Carl Ludwig Willdenow (August 22, 1765 - July 10, 1812) are the scientists who are given credit for the first official Linnaean-style taxonomy of the poinsettia plant in 1834. But a known plant's name may take two forms: a common (as in the Aztec cuetlaxochitl, the English painted leaves plant or poinsettia, the Spanish pastora) and a scientific (Euphorbia pulcherrima).

The first discoverer of the plant didn't leave a record.

But the person who introduced the poinsettia (Eurphorbiapulcherrima) into the United States of America, and therefore to worldwide fame, was Joel Roberts Poinsett(March 2, 1779 - December 12, 1851). Poinsett's careers straddled botany, diplomacy, languages and medicine. Because he was trained and skilled at languages, he became Special Envoy of 1822-1823 and first U.S. Minister of 1825-1830 to Mexico. Because he was trained and skilled at botany and other sciences, he recognized the cultural, economic and scientific import of the brightly colored, late-blooming plant in its native southwest Mexican habitat. Because he was diplomatic and practical, he succeeded in sending specimens to his greenhouses in South Carolina and to those of choice botanist friends.
