As long as the school you choose is accredited, you should be able to trust it. Just make sure that the accreditation is legit. Many diploma mills will go as far as to create their own accreditation company just so they can appear to have the proper accreditation. You can check a list of legitimate accrediting agencies with the US Board of Education. For more information on accreditation, you can visit this website-

Just scroll down to "Accreditation." I hope this was helpful! Best of luck!

A previous promotional answer advertises Stratford Career Instutue as an option for obtaining a high school diploma (removed by supervisor as inaccurate and promotional).

As someone whose consulting firm's areas of expertise includes educational consulting; and as someone who has paid a high price in life for his anti-degree-mill, and anti-diploma-mill activism, I simply cannot allow such an answer to go without some further clarification, to wit:

All US high schools in public city and/or county school districts are accredited by one of America's six big "regional" accreditors which are approved by the US Department of Education (USDE). Anyone with a high school diploma from a school that it not "regionally" accredited does not really have a valid and univerally acceptable high school diploma.

To be accepted by employers, by the military, by accredited colleges and universities, and by government for any purposes for which a high school diploma is required, said diploma MUST be from a "regionally" accredited high school.

It matters, not, whether said high school is an "in-classroom" type school, or an "online" type school. All that matters is that it is "regionally" accredited. To obtain a high school diploma from any school that is not "regionally" accredited is just plain dumb. It's asking for nothing but trouble in life. It will not actually be worth anything. Period.

Stratford Career Institute is not "regionally" accredited. It is, in fact, not accredited by any USDE-approved agency. It claims, on its website to be accredited by the Better Busingss Bureau (BBB), but that is not the same as educational accreditation; and only educational accreditation matters.

Stratford also claims, on its website, membership in various seemingly impressive organizations, but none of those are accreditors, no matter how impressive they may seem.

My advice: Stay away from Stratford Career Institute, and any and all other schools of any kind which are not accredited by a USDE-approved agency. At the college level, it's okay, in some cases, for the school to only be "nationally" accredited, as long as its accreditor is USDE-approved, or is approved by the USDE-sanctioned Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). But at the high school level, only USDE-approved "regional" accreditation will do.

And that's the long and short of it.

The question was where one may earn a high school diploma online. There are many, many places... including, quite often via a program offered by one's own state board or department of education; and such programs are often free as long as the person inquiring/applying is a provable resident of the state, and is able to show that s/he once attended public school in said state. But even if one's state offers no such thing, there are many, many online high schools out there. Simply make sure that the one you choose is "regionally" accredited.

The absolutely most important thing to remember is that whatever high school you choose - be it of the "online" type, or the "in-classroom" type - it must be accredited by one of the US's six big "regional" accreditors approved by the US Department of Education (USDE). Seriously, nothing else will do.

Oh, sure, there's such a thing as USDE-approved "national" accreditation; and don't get me wrong: that's good accreditation. However, there's a decided pro-"regional" and anti-"national" accreditation bias among employers, colleges/universities, the military, etc., when it comes to high school diplomas.

"National" accreditation may be valuable, alongside "regional" accreditation, at the college/university level; but when it comes to a high school diploma, only one that came from a "regionally" accredited high school will do. Settle for nothing less! Don't believe anything to the contrary that anyone tells you.

Once you understand all that I've just written, and you buy-in to it, and operate accordingly, you cannot make a mistake in selecting an online high school...

...other than with respect to price, that is. Some online high schools are unbelievably expensive. It's ridiculous! Shame on them.

Most, though, gratefully, are reasonably priced. Some are even free if you meet certain conditions.

Find virtually any "regionally" accredited online high school that's reasonably priced, and you cannot go wrong.

There's a very bright (and nice... I've communicated with him) fellow out there named Tom Nixon who has written the two definitive books on getting an online high school education; and he has also built an excellent companion website where he provides a comprehensive list of the best online high schools out there. I've put a link to it in the "sources and related links" section of this web page, below.

However, please be warned that Tom includes, on his list, a few online high school programs that are excellent in terms of quality, but which may not necessarily be directly "regionally" accredited. Some of them are somehow approved by "regionally" accredited high schools or colleges, but that's not the same. The high school and its program, itself, must be "regionally" accredited. So, then, even if you use Tom's list, double-check any school you select and verify, independently, that it's "regionally" accredited.

And by "independently," I simply mean to never trust what any online high school claims on its website. The diploma mills will all lie, so until you know, for sure that any school isn't a diploma mill, you can't trust a thing it puts on its website.

So, always figure out in which US state the online high school is physically located; then figure out which of the six big "regional" accreditors covers that state; then go to said "regional" accreditors' website and look-up the online high school in question and verify that it's really "regionally" accredited. Once you do, then, at that point, you really can believe everything on its website. But not until!

Please verify the accreditation of any online high school... even the ones listed on Tom Nixon's website. Don't get me wrong, he'd never mislead you. The problem is that he's not quite as rigid as am I when it comes to insisting that one should never enroll in any online high school which is not, itself, directly "regionally" accredited. Period. So, always, always, always verify!
Please see the "sources and related links" section, below, for a link to Tom Nixon's best online high schools website. You'll definitely be able to find something there (and, no, I have nothing to do with his site; I just know of it, and that it's good, and so I routinely recommend it).

There are many on line education bodies that are well respected schools but this cannot be assumed. Sadly, there are a number of on line schools that either have no accreditation or are accredited by a body that itself is not recognized by other academic institutions.

Before selecting any online school, do some research to see who has accredited it and also get in touch with your local "bricks and mortar" university and ask if a qualification from the online school will be recognized by them.

There are many places online that can provide you with a high school diploma. It would be wiser though to physically attend a high school.
