Asscher is a cut of diamond favored if the colour and clarity are superior and the raw diamond is fairly large. Cutting and polishing a diamond loses about 60% of its carat weight. Although any size raw diamond can be cut this way. From the Diamond Pro web site, this is a description of the Asscher cut: "Depth is 60% to 68% -- under 65% is relatively hard to find; table is 60% to 68%, polish/ symmetry is good, very good or excellent, and the length/ width ratio is 1.00 to 1.05 according to the GIA acceptable range for defining a diamond as a square [cut]."
The Asscher cut may vary in the number of facets, depending on the weight of the stone, who cut the stone and who is selling it. This cut is essentially a square emerald cut. You can read more about it, below.

Physically, there is no limit -- no maximum size. Practically, however, your source material can present limitations. Any raw diamond can be cut in the Asscher cut. This squarish-looking cut intends to highlight flawless stones, so the raw diamond you intend to cut in this style must be internally flawless (if you want the highest value). As well, a D-F colour grade is required, since any hit of G or more yellow colour (in a colourless stone) will appear in the corners of an Asscher cut. These limitations mean that very few raw diamonds will appear in the larger weights to be cut in this style. Finally about 60% of a raw diamond's weight is lost during the cutting and polishing process.
Asscher cut diamonds may be purchased from Blue Nile. They offer all types of diamonds jewelry including engagement rings, pendants and earrings just to name a few. They also offer lower prices than other retailers when purchasing online.
