Answer
The Australian Is owned by Newscorp, started in 1964 by Rupert Murdoch as Australia's first national newspaper. Though it may have once held independent opinion, it was co-opted by self serving ideologues of the Liberal Party and is nothing more then a mouthpiece for their policies.
John Howard's has recently given his support for 'The Australian' in saying:"Can I say something about The Australian's contribution to the national political debate. It has made, as a newspaper, a remarkable contribution, I think back over the last 10 years that this government has been in office and I think of the positions taken by The Australian newspaper.
"It has been broadly supportive, generously so, of the government's economic reform agenda. And it has been a strong supporter, consistently... of industrial relations reform. Its only criticism of the government is that it might not have gone far enough."
- John Howard, Thursday 2 March 2006.
More recently their 'independent' reports such as Caroline Overteen have been found to be lobbying for incumbent members such as Malcolm Trunbull in the 2007 election.
In light of these self-serving editorials, the paper has become less and less relevant to the majority of Australians which can help explain its drop in readership as former patrons move to more reliable online news sources.
