  • Lao Tzu, the Chinese founder of Taoism, 4th Century BC
  • This is a Chinese Proverb. "If you give a man a fish you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime." It is better to teach someone how to do something than to do it for them. Giving someone a fish is good for the short term, but it is better to teach them how to do it so that in the long term they can take care of themselves. For example, a mother could cook for her children, but if she never teaches them to cook, they will always be dependent on her for meals. If she teaches them how to cook they will be able to take care of themselves in the long term.
  • The quotation gained popularity in in 1963 after being used in the Christian Science Monitor that year. An old native American proverb had basically the same wording. An old English proverb also appears to have had almost the same wording. Sometimes the phrase is credited to Kuan Tzu, a Chinese Taoist philosophical text from about 2,700 years ago.

If you give someone a fish they will eat it and it is gone forever (it is only there for a day) but if you teach someone to fish they will always be able to fish (for a lifetime).

How many feet in 43 miles?

I could just give you the answer but someone once said, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for one day. Teach him to fish and you feed him for life." Take out your calculator, dust it off and try this with me. There are 5,280 feet in one mile. Put 5280 in the calculator. Hit the multiplication key, ( X ) and then put the number 43 in there. Next hit the equals key ( = ) and there is your answer. 227,040 feet in 43 miles.

To calculate grades, divide the smaller number by the larger number... 26 divided by 31... You'll end up with a decimal. Your percentage is the first two digits after the decimal point. I'm not telling you the answer because you need to help your self. "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day; give him a fishing pole and teach him how to use it, feed him for life."

What does it mean Build a man a fire and he will be warm for a day Set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life?

This phrase is a humorous twist on the idea of helping someone temporarily versus doing something extreme that will have a lasting effect. It suggests that giving someone what they need in the short term can provide temporary relief, but taking extreme measures may have permanent consequences. However, it should be noted that actually setting someone on fire is dangerous and should never be done.
