Montgomery Meigs was Quartermaster General of the US Army. It was Meigs who, having recently lost a son fighting the Confederates and feeling a little bit vindictive, ordered the seizure of property belonging to Robert E. Lee's wife and turned it into Arlington National Cemetery.

His descendant, Montgomery Meigs IV recently retired as a US Army general.

They are descended from a popular officer in George Washington's Continental Army during the Revolution, Return Jonathan Meigs. And that Return J. was not the first. A very early Meigs was courting a Quaker girl, and arrived at her house one evening to find a rival for her affections there ahead of him. He started off in a huff, and the gentle Quakeress said "Oh, return, Jonathan". After they were married they named their first son to commemorate the incident.
